Update on AAWU Strike Notice
11th August 2009: The industrial court has issued a temporary stay prohibiting Aviation and Allied Workers Union (AAWU) from going ahead with their planned strike.
Both management and AAWU officials have been directed to appear before the industrial court on 17 August at 9am.
The main grievances of the Aviation and Allied Workers Union (AAWU), the group behind the planned strike is a demand to have their wages increased by 130 percent.
To date, 26 meetings have been held and the management has so far awarded 8 percent increase on basic salary and all fixed allowances for the period under review, which has been rejected by the union representatives.
Kenya Airways has been holding collective bargain agreement negotiations with AAWU since 9th April 2009. The main purpose of these negotiations has been to review terms and conditions of AAWU members.
“Once again, we urge all our customers to remain calm as we await the settlement of this dispute in accordance with the law,” said Titus Naikuni, Managing Director and CEO, Kenya Airways.
“We would also like to assure all our passengers that we will continue to maintain our schedule integrity as we continue consultations with the Union,” he added.
